Test Description:

- Doppler Effect: In Carotid Doppler, the test not only visualizes structures but also examines blood flow within the carotid arteries using the Doppler effect, which measures the frequency change of sound waves bouncing off moving objects, such as blood.
Purpose of Carotid Ultrasound:
- Assess Blood Flow: It is primarily used to evaluate the amount and quality of blood flow in the carotid arteries, the major blood vessels supplying blood to the brain.
- Detect Narrowing: The test helps identify any narrowing (stenosis) of the carotid arteries due to factors like cholesterol deposits or other issues.
- Stroke Risk Assessment: Carotid ultrasound is often performed on individuals who have had a stroke or are at high risk of stroke due to reduced blood flow in their carotid arteries.
Preparation:
- No special preparation is usually required for this test.
Procedure:
- The technician applies a clear gel to one side of your neck to facilitate the movement of the ultrasound sensor.
- The sensor is placed on your skin, and it produces images on a video screen.
- By moving the sensor back and forth on your neck, the technician obtains various views of the carotid artery.
- During the test, you may hear a noise resembling your heartbeat as the equipment measures blood flow.
- Both sides of your neck are typically examined.
- The procedure usually lasts 15 to 30 minutes.
Risks:
- Carotid ultrasound is a safe and non-invasive procedure, and there are no significant risks associated with it.
Post-Test Instructions:
- No specific actions are typically required after the test.
Result Reporting:
- The technician records the test on videotape for review by a radiologist.
- The radiologist analyzes the video images, makes measurements, and prepares a report.
- Your doctor should receive the results within a few days, and they will then discuss the findings with you.
