Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a medical diagnostic technique that uses a combination of strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of the body.
What Is MRI?
- MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce images of the body’s internal structures.
- It relies on the behavior of hydrogen atoms in the body’s tissues when exposed to the magnetic field and radio waves.
- These signals generate images that can be of single slices or combined to create 3-D images.
Applications of MRI:
- MRI is used to diagnose a wide range of medical conditions, including stroke, multiple sclerosis, and various brain and spinal cord disorders.
- It is particularly effective in detecting tumors in different organs, such as the brain, spinal cord, lung, liver, bone, prostate, and uterus.
- MRI can help differentiate between cancerous and noncancerous breast lumps in women with dense breast tissue or breast implants.
Preparation:
- Patients with metallic implants (e.g., pacemakers, artificial joints, metal plates, screws, surgical clips), hearing aids, metal monitoring devices, or certain types of tattoos may not be eligible for MRI.
- Claustrophobic individuals can request medication to help them relax during the procedure.
- Some MRI machines are open, which may be more comfortable for some patients.
Procedure:
- MRI is typically an outpatient procedure performed in a hospital or scanning facility.
- Patients need to lie still on a scanning table, which may slide into a narrow cylinder or have the machine move over them, depending on the type of MRI scanner.
- The procedure is painless but can be noisy due to the knocking sounds of the scanner.
- Contrast agents like gadolinium may be used to enhance the images and are administered through an IV catheter.
- After the procedure, patients may feel drowsy if sedatives or tranquilizers were used, so they should arrange for transportation.
Follow-Up:
- MRI results are interpreted by specialists, and patients should follow up with their doctor to discuss the findings.
Risks:
- MRI is generally safe for people without implanted metallic or electrical devices.
- Gadolinium, a contrast agent, can have rare side effects, such as nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF), which is more likely in individuals with kidney problems.
- Allergic reactions to the contrast agent are rare but possible.

- Patients usually do not need to call their doctor after the MRI unless directed to do so for follow-up.
