What is Abdominal Ultrasound?
Abdominal ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging procedure that utilizes sound waves (ultrasound) to generate images of the organs and structures within the abdomen. It does not involve the use of radiation.
A transducer, resembling a microphone, is placed on the patient’s skin by a radiologist or ultrasound technician. This transducer emits sound waves into the body and captures the echoes as they bounce off internal organs and tissues. A computer processes these echoes to create real-time images displayed on a screen.
Doppler ultrasound is a variation that also assesses blood flow within blood vessels, aiding in the detection of issues such as blood clots and narrowing of vessels due to cardiovascular disease.
What It’s Used For
Abdominal ultrasound is primarily used to visualize and evaluate various abdominal organs, including:
- Abdominal aorta and other blood vessels in the abdomen
- Bladder
- Gallbladder
- Kidneys
- Liver
- Pancreas
- Spleen
It is employed to detect conditions like gallstones, liver abnormalities, kidney cysts or tumors, urinary blockages, measurement of spleen size, aorta width, and the presence of abdominal fluid (ascites). However, it’s not suitable for assessing the intestines or in cases of severe obesity.
Preparation
Patients may be required to fast before the test to reduce air in the intestines and improve image quality. Diabetic patients may need to adjust their medication on the day of the test.
How It’s Done
Abdominal ultrasound is generally quick and painless. Patients lie on their back on an examination table, and a clear jelly is applied to the lower abdomen to facilitate the movement of the ultrasound transducer and improve image quality.
The transducer is then placed on the skin, and the technician or doctor moves it across the abdomen to capture images from different angles. If a Doppler ultrasound is performed, patients may hear the sound of blood flow within vessels.
Follow-Up
Preliminary results may be provided immediately if the doctor performs the ultrasound. Otherwise, a technician will record the test, and a radiologist will review the images and provide a report to the doctor, who will share the results with the patient in one to four days.
Risks
Abdominal ultrasound, like all ultrasound procedures, does not expose patients to ionizing radiation and has no documented health risks, even with repeated tests.
