Ultrasound, also known as sonography, is a medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of tissues and organs inside the body. These sound waves are beyond the range of human hearing and are similar to how sonar is used by animals like dolphins or submarines to detect objects underwater. Here is an overview of ultrasound:
What It Is: Ultrasound involves the following key principles:
- High-frequency sound waves are directed into the body.
- Some sound waves are absorbed by body tissues, while others bounce back.
- The bounced-back sound waves (echoes) are captured and processed by an ultrasound machine.
- These echoes are transformed into images of specific body structures or areas.
Ultrasound is particularly effective for imaging soft tissues and fluid-filled organs, but less suitable for air-filled organs or bones. It is a safe and painless procedure that typically takes 15 to 30 minutes.
Common Uses: Ultrasound has various medical applications, including:
- Monitoring Fetal Development: It is widely used during pregnancy to assess the health and growth of the fetus.
- Diagnosing Cysts: Ultrasound helps determine whether a lump or mass is a cyst.
- Evaluating Abdominal and Pelvic Organs: It provides information about the size and shape of organs in the abdomen and pelvis.
- Detecting Gallstones: Ultrasound can identify the presence of gallstones in the gallbladder.
- Diagnosing Blood Clots: It is used to check for blood clots in the legs.

Preparation: Preparation for an ultrasound depends on the specific area of the body being scanned. Instructions may involve dietary restrictions or bladder filling (for pelvic scans). Patients are typically required to remove jewelry from the area being scanned.
Procedure: During the ultrasound:
- Patients are asked to wear a hospital gown and lie down on an examination table.
- A gel is applied to the skin over the scanning area to enhance sound wave transmission.
- A small ultrasound instrument (transducer) is moved over the gel-covered area, sending and receiving sound waves.
- Reflected sound waves are processed by a computer and displayed on a screen in real-time.
- Patients may be asked to hold their breath or change position to optimize image quality.
- After the scan, the gel is wiped off, and patients can get dressed.
Follow-Up: After an ultrasound, most patients can resume their normal activities and diet. However, if the ultrasound was used for a needle biopsy, patients should follow any specific instructions provided by their doctor regarding post-procedure care and follow-up.
